Coca-Cola to close two UK sites, cutting nearly 300 jobs

Drinks giant Coca-Cola is planning to close its manufacturing site in Milton Keynes and distribution warehouse in Northampton with the loss of nearly 300 jobs.
The company said the changes were necessary because they would provide "significant productivity improvements" in its manufacturing and distribution process.
A spokesman said the total number of job losses would be 288 and that the sites would close in 2019, at which point the work carried out by those two factories would be moved to other locations.
This will create 121 roles in its manufacturing and distribution networks, meaning some staff could be re-employed at one of the sites.
The company has five other manufacturing sites besides Milton Keynes and in terms of other sites related to distribution, it has a logistics site in Nottingham, a customer hub in Peterborough and an operations centre in Milton Keynes near to the manufacturing site which is likely to close.
A spokesman for the company said: "We know today’s news will be upsetting for our people at these sites, and our immediate priority is to support them throughout the consultation process.
"We are proud of our long standing links with both towns and have not made these proposals lightly. However, we believe the proposed changes are necessary as they would provide significant productivity improvements and create greater efficiency across our manufacturing and distribution operations in Great Britain."
